To combat, or at least make use of my insomnia, I have decided that getting in a 3-4 mile run before 6AM is a good idea. Not that it really does anything to help me return to slumber, it’s a good use of time that would otherwise be spent staring at the ceiling. So I’ve been strapping on my new Lunarswifts and hitting the cold pavement and brisk air. I haven’t run in a good long while, so I haven’t listened to those workout mixes I made oh so lopng ago. Dusting off an old iPod, they were still on there and ready to be played. I forgot how stocked with Jimmy Eat World they were/are. I forgot too how much I liked Jimmy Eat World. Instantly transported back a few years, I shadowboxed through most of my run today to Bleed American, or S/T, depending on when you bought it….So, join me in a bit of classic nostalgia, won’t you?
I was stoked, too, for the 20 degree morning versus the 5 degree one yesterday. It was downright TROPICAL out there today!
Help Sam out with them color choices, all. 88 days down. 12 to go…. Wow.
Update to the 100 Days of Ties Party…

You see a break in them shits? Fuck. No. No breaks in this house. And if I cuff, I’m putting 2 inches on you. My ankle cleavage be blowin’ up them internets.
December 7 is obviously a huge day in American history. In honor of our veterans and those still active in our armed forces, I donned a few hues of the ol’ red, white, and blue. Should have probably went all Made in the USA, too, and not gone with the H&M coat and J Crew tie and pants, but I will leave it up to the Wharf shirt and Tanner Goods belt to pick up that slack. Thank you to all that have and continue to risk their lives for the citizens of this great country.
Life has published an amazing set of photos of the Pearl Harbor attacks. Check them out.
It’s astounding how much even an extra half hour of sleep can be for one’s soul. I used to wake to the alarm around 5AM, drag my tired body from bed, throw on the garb for the day, pack a lunch, etc, and head out the door well before 5:50. What was I thinking? Scratched the old routine, one of many I need to change, and am getting a few extra Z’s. It’s like a whole new world, or one I haven’t seen in awhile, has been opened to me. Plus, the bus driver on the 7:23 to Boulder might just be the friendliest one yet…even if the usual guy I had earlier grew the gnarliest mustache and is damn proud of it.
I’m not even gonna really get into it today with some story or witty banter…. All I will say is I have developed a reignited passion for my fair mile high city of Denver, CO. It’s beautiful, my family and friends are all here (save for you out-of-staters), and I’m comfortable. Plus, we have excellent Mexican food. What else do you need?
One last thing right quick: I touched on maybe getting a little fund going to assist in my airfare to NYC for the party. Almost immediately, Paul from Graham Withers, featured today, chimed in with a cool $50 donation. If just another few people would be willing to do the same, I would really appreciate it. Lemme know if you are willing to donate by emailing me. Continue reading
Oh hell yes. Look at that kid right there! The tie says, “business,” the peacoat says, “style” and those boots say, “outta my effing way, dudeson. I ain’t got time for no crybaby antics, son. I don’t care if you are the frigid morning air or icy sidewalks or the fact that I am still ridiculously tired because I stayed up late watching Apprentice reruns when I should have been sleeping. Balderdash!” But in all honesty, I do not rock my Red Wings as much as I should. Today, though? Today just felt right to do so. Ands I’m glad I did. Super comfortable, wickedly durable, and the color is just bar none. Nothing like a shade of light chestnut among shades of blues and grays to make the outfit pop. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t already gotten a plethora of compliments on these ass-kickers… Same people who said something about the panda sweater. I’m just throwing the world for a loop. Now almost a year old, these Gentleman Travelers were WELL worth the price point. I recommend them highly. Also, every item on me I suggest checking out. Wharf and Pierrepont Hicks especially. You already know J. Crew and Levi’s and H&M.
Plus, we’re gonna revisit these boots just in time for the holidays….
In my prior life, I might just have been an eleventeen year-old girl as I have had an affinity for all things panda for as far back as I can remember. It’s what I named one of my first solo projects after (if you know me, you’ll get the title of this post better), it’s what I have been for Halloween, and the love of the animal is what initially drew me towards the fine product of Enjoi. Though the antics of Jerry Hsu, Louie Barletta, Colt Cannon, Caswell Berry, Jose Rojo and Marc Johnson (now gone) kept my attention, I was on a quest back in my skating daze to acquire most of their collection. So, when i was cleaning out my closet recently (you can’t tell from the picture), I was pretty stoked to come upon the Enjoi Panda Sweater that took me a LONG time to find back in the day.
So, with that in mind, kill some time watching Louie Barletta’s spot from Enjoi’s first video, Man Down. My fave point comes at 1:23….
Man, I really don’t know what happened last night, but I was only able to score maybe 3 hours of sleep in between some of the most messed up dreams I have ever had. It could be from the momentous weekend or the anxiousness of getting back to work today. That, and for whatever reason, this Leslie Nielsen death is hitting me quite hard. I actually choked up telling my father the bad news last evening. The Naked Gun trilogy as well as the old Police Squads were a special thing to my brothers and my father and me. He took us to see NG at such an early age, I had no idea what some of the jokes meant. Now, obviously, I get them, but I gotta hand it to him… He’s a pretty cool dad to have taken his children to see those flicks back then.
So, with the tip of my hat to one of the bygone comedic geniuses of our era, and of those prior, I say, thank you Mr. Nielsen for so many moments that brought not only smiles to this kid’s face and laughs to my soul, but for also providing my family with quotes that will serve as inside jokes for years and years to come.
“Hey! You call this slop? Real slop has got chunks in it! This is more like gruel! And this Château le Blanc ’68 is supposed to be served slightly chilled! This is room temperature! What do you think we are, animals?”
So it was a decent and almost pleasant walk through the morning air in Denver today en route to the bus. I thought, “Well, seeing as how last night I expected snow on the ground, today is going to be great.” Then, BAM! I get to boulder and the wind is whipping harder than Indiana Jones. It was one of those lean-forward-like-you’re-in-a-cartoon winds, too. Not fun. I then realized that, damn, if it weren’t for the scarf and jacket, I’d be a regular Denim Dan. I must’ve been tired this morning. But what’s done is done, and I’m now owning the J. Crew / Hill Side / LL Bean / Levi’s / Highland Home Industries get up. It’s all I can do. Just gotta go out there and give’r.
If you get that reference, we’re friends. Good friends.
UPDATE: I was just informed by my coworker that the outfit is more of a Canadian Casual Friday than a Canadian Tuxedo.
A few weeks back, I had my first experience with the waxed canvas tie from The Hill Side when I copped one from Rob and Co. at Wharf. Since, it has made its way around my neck on a number of different occasions from regular work garb, to a close friend’s wedding, and out and about in a casual setting. The weight, color, and feel of the waxed canvas was ideal. I was worried first off about the bulkiness of the knot after cinching up a half-windsor, but I gotta admit that after the tie, it was no larger than that of a silk knot. And opn that note, I have to say the classic silk tie might be among my least favorite to tie. Without fail, something gets tangled when I do.
The Hill Side, known for its dedication to quality neckwear is only made better when you consider all product is made right here in the good old United States of America. I am happy to wear a few offerings they sent my way, which I have done so already. The indigo raw denim selvedge I wore a few days back is quite special, as I failed to read the warning printed on the packaging (see below). But that’s another thing, each tie comes with a different description, obviously, but it’s not written like a company threw it on there. It’s like your friend is writing you a note. Which, in this day and age aside from an @ reply or DM or “like” to your status update, is not just nice but welcomed. So, thanks, and keep up the good work, Hill Side cast and crew.
I think it’s been since maybe grade school or a time I had to borrow a pair of pants from my father for church that I donned a pair of Dockers. But when I read about their khaki waders on Jeremiah’s blog I decided to give the brand that I until now attributed to that of which my mom would buy for me another go. The fit, the break, the color are all good. But what really got me, I s’pose was the fact that even if I wasn’t too keen on the pants when they came, the pricepoint of less than $50 (pre-tax, etc) made the purchase feel less like a commitment and more like a “Why the hell not?”
And you pair them waders with a Lands’ End / J. Crew / Modern Amusement / LL Bean kit? Tuesday, so far, is looking good, both physically and professionally. Boosh.
Despite the weekend not being as choice as I would have hoped, I was able to pop out of bed raring to go this Monday. And while I will not go into detail, I will say that with how well calculated my wardrobe is today, what with the Hill Side tie, J. Crew sweater and pinpoint oxford, (favorite) Gant Rugger Toggler, and LL Bean Ranger Mocs, I somehow managed to leave the house this morning with no gloves. Oops. Here it is, noon, and I’ve just regained feeling in my fingers. Sweet.
What I felt coming on yesterday seems to have taken hold of me today and rendered me bed-ridden and quite weak. So while I am not able to really move much less tie a tie today, the show must go on. Lots of good submissions today. And as they say, no rest for the weary. I do it for you. I also upped an jam from my former band, Stab!Heart!Kiss!Kill! on the Tumblr for your listening pleasure. I’ll do another today. Enjoy. And thanks.
I wrote this song with my friend Stephen back in 2006.
Stab Heart Kiss Kill - Japanese Motorcycle Campaign.
I’m keeping it short and sweet today as it hasn’t been the best start to what is actually a quite pleasant (weather-wise) Thursday. No sleep + cutting my hand + a perpetual feeling of nausea since rising from bed this morning = Not an ideal fourth day of the week. Even with the inclusion of playing with my WTWTA toys this AM, absolutely KILLING the LA Times crossword, managing to still look good (IMHO), and trying to calm down on the bus listening to Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky, I do not have high hopes for the day. But you play the hand you’re dealt, and I will grab whatever life throws at me today by the horns and wrestle that business to the ground.
